Travel day:

Travel on Singapore Airlines was so worth it. (I promise I’m not being paid) but really, we got three delicious meals, sizable legroom and a quiet smooth ride. Obviously weary, 18 whole hours later everyone arrived at the grand Singapore airport called Changi. My own account may be somewhat skewed due to my lack of sleep on the flight, but as soon as we arrived inside the terminal we were greeted by sweet smelling shops and miniature parks with lush greenery and fish in the ponds. A quick layover caused us to rush through the Singapore airport sadly, but we were promised to see the waterfalls on the travel home. We barely made the plane from Singapore to KL due to some peculiar security checks but overall it was a great travel experience. (except for the fact that Singapore Airlines doesn’t offer the movie Crazy Rich Asians, some filming sights of which we will see in Penang).

Day 1 in Kuala Lumpur:

After our long flights and some technical struggles (no phones made it difficult to get our digital visas), we made it through customs and were rewarded at the candy store before meeting up with our guides and heading into the city. We quickly dropped off our bags at the hotel before heading to the Central Market (a food court-like meal with loads of artisan shops around showing off local handicrafts) for lunch. My group shared some momos and noodles which were delicious! After getting some food, we walked around all of the shops for a while and found some new handmade skirts, bags, etc. It started to rain but we toughed it out and went to Petaling Street, which is a major hub of Chinatown. Similar to the Central Market, we got to explore lots of shops for a few needed (more than 3oz.) supplies and test out our negotiating skills. We made a quick stop at 7/11 before taking a nice (and needed) rest this afternoon. Then, we headed back out to the Jalan Alor night market for a yummy dinner (some people tried stingray and siput-sedut snails) and dessert (coconut ice cream in the nut for some). We are all very tired from our travels and busy day, but excited for the days to come in Kuala Lumpur and then our homestays!
